Revolving-door QB policy
Orlando Sentinel | October 09, 2008
If Jon Gruden, as expected, opts to start Jeff Garcia for banged-up Brian Griese in Sunday's pivotal NFC South game against Carolina, it'll mark the 17th starting quarterback change of his seven season in Tampa Bay -- and the fifth made by choice, rather than necessitated by injury. Here are the previous 16.
Bucs Coach Gruden doubts a trade will happen
Orlando Sentinel | October 09, 2008
With five days to go before the NFL trade deadline (Tuesday, 4 p.m.), Tampa Bay would appear to be in need of a receiver, what with veteran speedster Joey Galloway expected to miss his fourth straight game when the Buccaneers (3-2) play the NFC South-leading Carolina Panthers (4-1) Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.

Carolina Is Coming For A Big Showdown

Tampa Bay Online | October 07, 2008
Jeff Garcia thought his days as the Bucs' starting quarterback were over. He should have known better.
Ruud Expects To Play
Tampa Bay Online | October 07, 2008
Barrett Ruud said his sore right knee is unlikely to keep him out of Sunday's big game against Carolina. Tampa Bay's active middle linebacker hurt his knee at Denver and didn't return in Sunday's 16-13 setback, but Ruud is optimistic he'll start at Raymond James Stadium against the Panthers, who lead the NFC South at 4-1. "It was a freak play," Ruud said. "I fell and looked like a non-athlete. It's a day-to-day thing, but I feel like I should be ready. A little soreness is no problem and that's what I've got right now." Ruud is a key component on a defense that has yielded only eight touchdowns in five weeks. If Ruud is unable to go, second-year pro Adam Hayward figures to make his first NFL start.
Figure on Garcia getting start
Orlando Sentinel | October 07, 2008
Jon Gruden had nothing new to report on his quarterback situation Monday, but expect a new starter when Tampa Bay faces Carolina in a pivotal NFC South Division game Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.
Gruden Not Sure About Who's Bucs' No. 1 Quarterback
Tampa Bay Online | October 06, 2008
A full return to health by Brian Griese may not be enough to save his starting job. Griese hurt his right elbow and shoulder during Sunday's 16-13 loss at Denver when he was hit by blitzing CB Champ Bailey. He was replaced by former No. 1 Jeff Garcia, who completed 13-of-17 passes for 93 yards and a TD that pulled Tampa Bay within three points with 2:02 remaining.

Some Things Never Change For Bucs Offense
Tampa Bay Online | October 06, 2008
Barack Obama was at this football stadium not too long ago to make an acceptance speech. Subject: change. We're pretty sure this wasn't the change he was talking about. It definitely wasn't the change Jon Gruden was talking about.

5 5 1 Plays That Made A Difference By Roy Cummings 2 3 4
Tampa Bay Online | October 06, 2008
Change Of Plans The Bucs and Broncos were still feeling each other out when the Bucs walked to the line for a second-and-8 play from their 22 midway through the first quarter. Bucs QB Brian Griese didn't like what he saw and immediately checked out of his original play and into a run to the right for Earnest Graham. Good call. With the Broncos' defense running around a bit, Graham ran around their left flank for 14 yards before being run out of bounds. Two plays later, a 38-yard run by Warrick Dunn got the Bucs into scoring position. The Bucs didn't let the chance go to waste. After three plays netted them 6 yards, they still capitalized, notching a 33-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 4:28 left in the quarter.
What Went Right, What Went Wrong
Tampa Bay Online | October 06, 2008
What went right for the Bucs: Tampa Bay got its running game going. Earnest Graham popped a 14-yarder, and Warrick Dunn followed with a 38-yard burst.
Bucs Get Roughed Up By Broncos
Tampa Bay Online | October 06, 2008
It wasn't meant to be a bury-the-hatchet moment. No one said I'm sorry, let's move on, but that's pretty much what Bucs coach Jon Gruden and his estranged quarterback Jeff Garcia did late Sunday.
Griese not only injury suffered by Bucs
Orlando Sentinel | October 06, 2008
Injuries add up: Brian Griese wasn't the only casualty for Tampa Bay during Sunday's 16-13 road loss at Denver. The team was very concerned with a right knee sprain suffered by MLB Barrett Ruud, the Buccaneers' leading tackler the last two seasons. Ruud left the game early in fourth quarter after shadowing QB Jay Cutler on a bootleg play. "They did one of those quarterback read-type of things," Ruud said. "I planted and just skipped and it kind of buckled up. It's going to hurt this week, I'm sure, but I can move it pretty good. It just feels sore." Ruud, who was replaced by second-year pro Adam Hayward, will undergo tests in Tampa. Griese, meanwhile, didn't think his elbow injury was serious, just a bruise. "The swelling made it tough for me to grip the ball," he said. "I'm going to get as much treatment as I can."

Ask around the NFL and everybody agrees. It's a little different playing in Denver. For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it's really different. When the Bucs (3-1) put their three-game win streak on the line Sunday against the Broncos (3-1) at Invesco Field, it'll mark just their fourth trip to the Mile High City in the franchise's 33 seasons and first since 1996.

Bucs-Packers: 5 Plays That Made A Difference
Tampa Bay Online | September 29, 2008
Brooks Changes Momentum The Packers weren't really trying to get much when they lined up to run a third-and-18 play at their own 27 at the outset of the second quarter. A throw to RB Brandon Jackson just beyond the line of scrimmage was designed to gain a few yards and improve field position for the punter, and that's what the play would have accomplished had Jackson caught the ball. When all Jackson could do was tip it, Derrick Brooks grabbed it and quickly pitched the ball back to Cato June. June didn't gain much once he got the ball - just a yard - but he didn't have to. The pick gave the Bucs the ball at the Packers 32-yard line, and from there they moved in to tie the score at 7.

Bucs frustrate Packers QB Rodgers
Orlando Sentinel | September 29, 2008
Rodgers finds out how tough Bucs can be: Aaron Rodgers found out Sunday what the likes of Donovan McNabb, Daunte Culpepper, Michael Vick and most recently Matt Ryan found out early in their careers: No matter how talented you are, it's tough facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if you've never faced them before. "He's really good. It isn't like he's a rookie in the system," Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said as he soaked in a satisfying 30-21 home defeat of the Green Bay Packers. "But we said, because he is young as far as playing experience, we've got to stop the run and the make them one-dimensional." The Bucs held the Pack's rushing attack to 28 yards on 18 carries (just 1.6 per try). Without anything going on the ground, Rodgers was forced to the air. He came in with no interceptions on the season, but went just 14-of-27 for 165 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions, three sacks and a passer rating of 47.8. Rodgers also had to leave the game after injuring his shoulder in the third quarter, though he did return after giving way one series to Matt Flynn, who went 2-of-5 for 6 yards.

Receivers Share The Load
Tampa Bay Online | September 22, 2008
Tampa Bay's receiving corps seemed destined for another letdown. With standout receiver Joey Galloway, who posted 1,000 receiving yards each of the past three seasons, sidelined by a foot injury, the Bucs were forced to rely on a group that previously had done little to suggest it could make up for Galloway's absence.

5 Plays That Made A Difference
Tampa Bay Online | September 22, 2008
Tipped Pass Helped Bears A bad start for the Bucs only got worse when Brian Griese dropped back to pass on a second-and-17 play from his own 12-yard line early in the first quarter. Griese was looking to throw a quick screen to B.J. Askew, but his soft toss over the line of scrimmage was tipped by Brian Urlacher and then intercepted by Lance Briggs. Briggs didn't get much of a return and the Bucs defense did its job, stopping the Bears after just three plays, including a sack of Bears quarterback Kyle Orton on their third offensive play. Still, the Bears were able to grab the momentum and take an early lead when PK Robbie Gould drilled a 40-yard field goal to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

Bucs' Barber has challenging day against Bears
Orlando Sentinel | September 22, 2008
Not living in the past: Cornerbacks, they say, have short memories. Ronde Barber hasn't lasted 12 seasons in the NFL living in the past -- and he'd better not start now. Barber had an awful second half in Sunday's 27-24 overtime win at Chicago as QB Kyle Orton picked on the veteran during two drives, both of which culminated in touchdowns. Barber surrendered plays of 21, 18 and 27 yards, plus a two-point conversion on the first march, and a 19-yard scoring pass to Brandon Lloyd on the second. Barber said the Bears were audibling to three-step drops and fades when they saw Tampa Bay safeties dropping toward the line. "When we were in it, when the safety came down, we're obviously in three-deep and they checked at the line every time -- and he made the throws," Barber said. "And then they ran an out-and-up. Same thing. Give them credit." And give Barber the benefit of the doubt. After years manning that cover-two corner, he's earned it. "I'm not worried about Ronde," CB Phillip Buchanon said. "And I know Ronde's not worried about Ronde."

Tampa Bay Online | September 21, 2008
What wind there was in Chicago on Sunday generated by Brian Griese, which threw a near-record 67 NFL passes. More important to Griese and the Bucs, of course, is that they came from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to win in overtime, 27-24.

Tampa Bay Online | September 19, 2008
Week 2 was far less destructive for fantasy owners than the week before, but it wasn't without its own important storylines. Michael Turner was cooled off by a solid Bucs run defense, and Eddie Royal proved he can put up solid numbers even if Brandon Marshall catches like, I don't know, 18 passes. Matt Cassel proved that while he might keep the ship afloat for the Patriots, he is far from being a solid fantasy contributor. Jonathan Stewart showed owners that he is ready to take the starting job from DeAngelo Williams for good.

Griese bucs trend
Chicago Sun-Times | September 18, 2008
If Chicago is the place where wide receivers go to die -- as Muhsin Muhammad says he didn't really say -- then it's a virtual burial ground for quarterbacks. Count Brian Griese as one who got out alive. View From The Sidelines: Monday Morning Quarterback
Tampa Bay Online | September 16, 2008
There's a reason the Bucs treated Sunday's matchup against Atlanta as a must-win game - the difference between a 1-1 start and losing your first two games is enormous. In the past two seasons, only two (2006 Chiefs, 2007 Giants) of the 21 clubs that opened 0-2 made the playoffs. ... The Panthers have averaged 24 points per game in QB Jake Delhomme's five starts since the beginning of the 2007 season. Without Delhomme in that span, Carolina averaged 15 points.
Jacksonville's struggling ground game is putting too much pressure on David Garrard, who has already matched last year's total of three interceptions. ... A week after rising up against Tampa Bay, the Saints' defense returned to normalcy in the nation's capital as the Redskins rolled up 25 first downs and 455 yards. ... Eddie Royal, an undersized WR drafted in the second round out of Virginia Tech, has enjoyed a spectacular start for the surprisingly potent Broncos. ... They won the turnover battle, committed only two penalties and outgained Indy 180-25 on the ground. So just how did the Vikings manage to blow a 15-0 lead at the Metrodome?

Bucs-Falcons: 5 Plays That Made A Difference
Tampa Bay Online | September 15, 2008
Falcons coach Mike Smith needed only three plays to make his first rookie mistake Sunday. On a third-and-15 play from his own 18-yard line, Smith allowed his play-caller (we assume it was coordinator Mike Mularkey) to call for a pass play against the Bucs' nickel defense. The play wouldn't have worked even if its intended receiver, Harry Douglas, had caught the ball. When Douglas let the ball slip through his hands, though, the Falcons became married to the disaster they courted on that play. Rookie Aqib Talib only ran 2 yards after recording his first NFL interception but that was enough to set up the Bucs' first touchdown.

LB Brooks continues streak for Bucs
Orlando Sentinel | September 15, 2008
Brooks' streak continues: Tampa Bay LB Derrick Brooks was invisible at team headquarters this past week, including on the practice field. No one was certain what would happen come Sunday against Atlanta, which made for some pregame drama given the 10-time Pro Bowler and franchise icon had the longest streak for consecutive starts in the NFL among active defensive players. The mark still stands. "I lost count," Brooks said following the Buccaneers' 24-9 victory when asked how many hours he spent in treatment in rehab last week. "I'm good at following instructions." By lining up for the first play against the Falcons, Brooks ran his string to 194 straight starts, a run that dates to the last game of the 1996 season. "I didn't know he was going to play -- no one did -- so I was surprised to see him there," DE Greg White said. "It's another testament to a Hall-of-Fame linebacker. It's a privilege to practice, play and sweat with him." MLB Barrett Ruud said Brooks' mere presence was all the team needed. "He was like Willis Reed," Ruud said. "All he had to do was limp out there and we were going to rally around him."
