The Eagles' season veered even farther off course yesterday with the news that the team's franchise running back, the key to the offense, was back at square one, starting rehab on a painful injury that threatens to keep him out of this week's game and limit his effectiveness even beyond that. Westbrook was injured six plays into his comeback from the ankle strain that had kept him out of the previous week's loss.

Little things have meant a lot of disappointment for Eagles so far
Philly.com | October 02, 2008
A year ago, the Eagles went 8-8, and they were 1-5 in games decided by 4 points or fewer. Sunday's loss was the second four-point-margin game the Birds have played this season, and the second loss. The 41-37 setback at Dallas wasn't widely viewed in that context, because the Cowboys were favored and the Eagles played pretty well. Chicago was different - the Eagles were slight favorites and they outgained the Bears, 340 net yards to 256, while forcing three second-half turnovers. But they couldn't close the deal, as, among other things, they failed in three successive cracks at the Bears' goal line from the 1 in the final minutes. Does this team still lack a certain something in tight games?

Philly.com | September 29, 2008

"I did the best I could, the linemen did the best they could," said Buckhalter, who gained 66 yards on 16 carries, but needed 1 more. "We just came up short . . . It hurts bad. They just executed better than we did."
Eagles squander chances to beat Bears
Philly.com | September 29, 2008
A game that should have been won was lost because they squandered chance after chance after chance in a 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
Bob Ford: Fourth-game blues and miscues
Philly.com | September 29, 2008
Last night's 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears doesn't fall into the category of their previous defeat, a worthy shoot-out with the Cowboys, and the performance was miles from what the Eagles managed in wins over the Rams and Steelers.
Paul Domowitch: Reid between the lines on Eagles' running game
Philly.com | September 29, 2008
I don't mean to rip Akers, who has provided the Eagles with many years of meritorious service. But he no longer is the sure thing he was earlier in his career. Last year, he missed eight of 10 attempts from 40-plus yards. At the time, I would have taken my chances with Buckhalter or Hunt running behind Jamaal Jackson and Max Jean-Gilles over Akers from 50 yards out.

You don't try to figure out these Bears. You certainly don't try to get inside their heads and poke around, lest you get stuck there and start talking in the third person about bandwagon-jumping or a lack of respect.
Bob Ford: Birds simply can't cash in
Philly.com | September 29, 2008
The Eagles were without running back Correll Buckhalter for a long stretch of the third quarter and that took away some options, and some blocking, but that doesn't explain all of the problems. It was clearly not a good night for McNabb and the question was whether he would get things back together in time to pull out the game in the final quarter.
Sam Donnellon: Some leaks in strong pass defense
Philly.com | September 29, 2008
The Eagles entered last night allowing four of 23 third-down conversions of 6 yards or more. Pretty good, right? Yep, until you start to remember some of the big plays that have come on other downs.

Philly.com | September 28, 2008
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The New York Jets' defense rattled and roughed up Kurt Warner in the second quarter, and Brett Favre took care of the rest. Favre threw a career-high and Jets-record six touchdown passes, including three to Laveranues Coles, and New York took advantage of a series of mistakes by Arizona in a big second quarter before holding on to beat the Cardinals 56-35 on Sunday.

Where are they now: Gary Pettigrew
Philly.com | September 26, 2008
Eagles memory: Both dealt with facilities. One had to do with Franklin Field, where the Eagles played until moving to the Vet in 1971. "It was great," he said. "The grass. The fans were close. The only thing negative thing was the locker room," which he called tiny, cramped and cold. "It was like War Memorial Stadium where you had your clothes on a nail driven into a piece of wood." At least the new stadium came with a weight room, which Franklin Field didn't have when he arrived. "I couldn't believe it. I walked into [coach Joe] Kuharich's office and said, 'What's going on here?' I mean I had a weight room at Stanford. They finally put one in my second year in Philly. I used to have to go to Jersey and work out with [lineman] Bob Brown in a gym."
Playing for Bears a rush for Forte
Philly.com | September 26, 2008
There's a tradition to uphold and, with all apologies to Thomas Jones, Raymont Harris and others, the Bears haven't had someone control that position for an extended period of time since Neal Anderson took over for Walter Payton.

Eagles wideout Curtis tests injury in limited practice
Philly.com | September 25, 2008
When you're rehabbing an injury, after you've talked about it once or twice, and a little time goes by, media members generally leave you alone, until there's something new to talk about. A.J. Feeley, third quarterback, Philadelphia. He's played in some big games - he nearly beat the Patriots at New England last year when Donovan McNabb was hurt - and the Eagles would be willing to talk about him because of their comfort level at backup quarterback with Kevin Kolb. He's somewhere between Clint Longley and Jim Plunkett in terms of a guy who might have a chance to play effectively with a good team around him. He's the guy I'd try to deal for, but remember one thing: The Eagles always try to beat teams into submission on trades; anything more than a fifth-round pick in 2009 would be too much.

Philly.com | September 24, 2008
He shares his boss Andy Reid's belief that you win in the NFL by throwing the football, and he has concentrated most of his efforts into thwarting that particular aspect of his opponent's offensive repertoire, as evidenced by the large pile of Benjamins that the Eagles gave free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel, and the slightly smaller pile they gave pass rusher Chris Clemons.

Highlights from the sports blogs
Philly.com | September 22, 2008
The Eagles went a long way toward proving they belong in the conversation of who the best team in the league is, especially if they can get a good game from both sides of the ball at some point this season. While we will all nervously wait to see how serious the injury is to Brian Westbrook, Eagles fans should be happy that the Eagles split a pair of games against two of the NFL's elite teams in the Cowboys and Steelers. Looking at their 2-1 record and the teams they get to play the next few weeks, the Eagles are in a solid position. Of course, if Westbrook is out for any period of time, that solid position begins to look pretty shaky.

Paul Domowitch: Johnson's defensive mission a success for Eagles
Philly.com | September 22, 2008
You definitely noticed it last Monday night when Johnson's defense sat back and relied mainly on a four-man rush to stop Tony Romo and the Cowboys. To say the strategy didn't work would be an understatement. Romo threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns and wasn't sacked a single time in a 41-37 Cowboys' win.

But a lot of people think the NFC might actually be as good as or better than the Tom Bradyless AFC this season. If the Eagles are as good as they've given hints of being, they will find a way to bounce back and gut this out. I just don't think a team that wants to run the ball is going to come in here and roll. If the Steelers win, it will be because of their defense. And so far, the Eagles haven't had problems scoring on anybody.

Philly.com | September 18, 2008
On the football field, there is no hiding weakness, no covering up time's ceaseless erosion of strength and speed and skill. Because Dawkins is 34, it is all too easy to conclude from Monday night's game in Dallas that he has reached the expiration date that is stamped somewhere on every great athlete.

Philly.com | September 18, 2008
So Dawkins' reaction was predictable when reporters asked the Eagles' six-time Pro Bowl safety his opinion of the general discussion of his age and ability level, as he approaches his 35th birthday next month. The Eagles' defense was torched in a 41-37 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, and Dawkins frequently was near the scene of the crime, especially the repeated clutch catches by tight end Jason Witten, and the 4-yard touchdown catch by Terrell Owens on which Dawkins has said he expected a fade but Owens ran a slant.

Steelers say Roethlisberger and his sore shoulder will be ready for Eagles
Philly.com | September 18, 2008
What also is clear is that the shoulder injury the Pittsburgh quarterback suffered in Week 1 continues to nag him. It's not as severe as a separation, but there is soreness resulting from a hit by Houston's Mario Williams. He was limited at practice yesterday and probably will be again today and tomorrow. But he will play Sunday, right coach?
