Dolphins achieve new look with same old players
Orlando Sentinel | October 06, 2008
Same guys, new look: L.J. Shelton watched his old team from the San Diego Chargers' side Sunday and saw a "different team" than the one he played for last season. More confident. More resilient. "Obviously, credit goes to that coaching staff, too," said Shelton, a Dolphins starting offensive lineman in 2007. "They're doing things in a completely different way than we did last year." The overlooked part? This new Dolphins regime is not doing it with completely different players. "They could have come in and said we're changing everything," holdover S Renaldo Hill said. It would have been impossible to change the entire roster in one offseason. So the regime tweaked the roles of many inherited guys. It moved Joey Porter to his more comfortable side. He harassed the quarterback again Sunday. It turned the middle linebacker spot over to Channing Crowder, and he has made more impact plays in four games than in the previous three seasons. It showed some confidence in David Martin, and Sunday he held on for a spectacular grab. It moved Matt Roth from defensive end to outside linebacker, and Sunday he had a sack, a pressure and three tackles for losses. It rewarded the sure-handed Greg Camarillo with more responsibility. Sunday? Six catches, one touchdown. "They utilize Greg well," Vincent Jackson said of his former Chargers teammate. "He's very crafty." So is this regime.

Talking points
Orlando Sentinel | September 22, 2008
Light at end of tunnel: They sprinted through the tunnel, Matt Roth tousling Dan Carpenter's hair, Justin Smiley slapping five, Jason Ferguson screaming, "Yeah, Yeah!" Yes, Sunday's 38-13 win meant something. Will it lead to a playoff spot? Not likely. Still, routing the Patriots should lead to greater credibility for Tony Sparano's program among players. That belief is something Cam Cameron never achieved in his one and, thus, only season. "We knew we were better than how we played the first two weeks," said Joey Porter, who had three sacks. "It's easy for us to say that, but when you don't have victories, nobody is really going to believe you." They beat the NFL's model franchise with execution and effort; Patriots WR Randy Moss said he could see how much the game meant to them. "They were dumping water on the head of their coach," Moss said. Sparano said all he had really wanted was to see his players smile. "Once you get that taste of success . . . it makes working harder that much easier," DB Will Allen said. "You understand what that hard work can breed."

Cardinals receiver Boldin burns Dolphins for 3 TDs
Orlando Sentinel | September 15, 2008
Run it up: Anquan Boldin had a simple message for his Cardinals teammates before facing the Dolphins: "It's not a crime to blow these teams out." No, but it is a first-degree football felony to pass over a receiver like him. The Dolphins again suffered for the folly of previous regimes Sunday as the Pahokee product caught six passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns. That was the 22nd 100-yard game Boldin has produced since the Dolphins -- specifically, former coach Dave Wannstedt -- chose LB Eddie Moore over Boldin in the second round of the 2003 draft. They did so even though the scouting staff put a late first-round grade on Boldin and a high third-ground grade on Moore, who is out of the NFL. In case that didn't bring back enough bad memories, Boldin created new ones. He capitalized on a miscommunication and a mismatch with LB Akin Akodele for a 79-yard TD. He lulled with "a kind of lazy motion" for his 3-yard score. He capped the day by snatching a pass behind him for an 8-yarder to make it 30-3. "These are the games we're supposed to win, and not just barely win," Boldin said.
