MANNING RETURNS

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning returned to practice Tuesday afternoon for the first time since undergoing offseason knee surgery. He said he's working toward playing in the season opener September 7 against Chicago, but isn't predicting anything.

WAITING AND SEEING

Colts center Jeff Saturday, a Pro Bowl selection the past three seasons, will miss at least the team's final preseason game, Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said. Dungy said the extent of Saturday's knee injury is not yet known.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who missed the first four preseason games recovering from offseason knee surgery, could return to practice this week, Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said Monday afternoon. Manning has yet to practice in training camp or preseason.

DISAPPOINTING FINISH

Overall, Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said the Colts on Sunday night did what they have done too often in the 2008 preseason, making too many mistakes and missing too many opportunities. The result was a 20-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the first preseason game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

BACK TO WORK

Safety Bob Sanders, who underwent offseason shoulder surgery, and defensive end Dwight Freeney - who missed the last seven games of last season with a foot injury - each returned to the starting lineup Sunday night in the Colts' preseason loss to Buffalo. Each played extensively in the first half, with Sanders making five tackles.

DRAMATIC UNVEILING

With a sold-out crowd of 65,333 and Colts players and coaches looking on, Colts Owner Jim Irsay appeared at midfield Sunday night shortly before kickoff of the team's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. He counted down and when he reached zero, the moveable window wall and retractable roof at new, state-of-the-art Lucas Oil Stadium opened.

COLTS LOSE 20-7

This is the 3rd quarter update, stories coming soon. The Colts trimmed the Buffalo Bills' lead to 17-7 on Sunday night entering the third quarter of the first preseason game at new, state-of-the-art Lucas Oil Stadium. Quarterback Quinn Gray threw a 94-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Devin Aromashodu with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter.

Rare Colts' preseason victory lacks much productivity

A NICE FEELING

The Colts beat the Atlanta Falcons, 16-9, in a preseason game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Saturday night, rallying from an early six-point deficit. The victory was the first for Indianapolis in the 2008 preseason and the Colts' third victory in the last 16 preseason games.

FINE FINISH

Indy’s special starters: Hayden, Jackson deal with extra pounding of special teams

You’ve heard it a million times before — special teams are one-third of football. In the age of specialization at all levels, not many offensive and defensive starters put that credo into practice. Special teams work is often consigned to second-stringers, usually by design, as the idea of exposing starters to injury is distasteful to most organizations.
