Hanie hopes he made lasting impression

CLEVELAND -- Caleb Hanie might have accomplished his goal of making it hard for the Bears to cut him.

First-team defense takes the night off

It either means everything, or it means nothing. All the Bears can do now is hope the preseason performance of their starting defense has no bearing on what is to come Sept. 7, when the 2008 season officially begins in Indianapolis.

It's first things worst

Lovie Smith could have left his first-team defense on the field all night Thursday. The way it was playing, it would have only embarrassed itself further. Hoping to find some improvement and maybe a little momentum after a poor effort the week before, the Bears instead found reason for alarm 10 days away from having to face Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.
